He would go to the woods to learn what it had to teach (81). The beauty of nature would then lead an individual to a higher spirituality. Our young nations expansionism, admiration on the primitive lifestyle of the Native Americans and artistic appreciation of the Hudson River School artists are all transcendental reactions to European romanticism. In summary, individual experiences, a distrust of classical forms and tradition and the appreciation of nature are three areas that transcendentalism can be seen as a reaction to European romanticism. Americans reaction to romanticism led to voting rights for all free adult males, a democratic form of government without a monarch, expansionism and Hudson River artists are all a result of our transcending romanticism. In my experience, doing research away from Caltech allows for students to learn how research is done at other institutions while gaining a new perspective on another part of the world. In the summer of 2017, I worked under the supervision of Dr. Franz Kaertner and Dr. Phillip Keathley at MIT in the Optics and Quantum Electronics group. I was introduced to optoelectronic devices and optical-field-controlled emission of electrons. During the ten weeks of my SURF, we made significant progress on the problem of determining if the emission was through field-dependent tunneling. However, to show field-dependency, we needed very fine intensity control. We tackled this problem of fine intensity control in the first half of my SURF using an Arduino†¦show more content†¦In addition, my research in Boston was faster-paced than any research I had done before. I believe that the change of pace increased my productivity in the lab, as I had to work hard to meet certain milestones every we ek. Through this experience, I gained a better understanding of what kind of research environment I perform best in. My time in Boston confirmed my interest in continuing to do research while giving me a background in optoelectronic devices. I hope to pursue a PhD after graduating from Caltech, and I believe that my SURF will be an invaluable asset for any future research. I was also given the opportunity to explore a city I had never seen before. I saw baseball games, concerts, and fireworks, and on top of having ten productive weeks of research, I was lucky enough to simultaneously spend ten fulfilling and eventful weeks in a wonderful city. If selected for the University of Tokyo summer program, I would like to continue my research of optoelectronic devices with Dr. Yoshiaki Nakano. Dr. Nakano’s work involves studying photonic integrated circuits to create useful devices with applications in optical communications, medical imaging, and optical quantum computing. Under some renderings, it refers to the philosophy of Plato. However, the term platonism is more widely used in contemporary philosophy to describe the metaphysical view that abstract objects (that is, those that are non-spatial and non-temporal) exist (Piyong 206). Almost universally, the distinction between these two understandings lies in the capitalization of the letter â€Å"p† (that is, the distinction between Platonism and platonism). The War of the Romantics was an important part of the Romantic music period. It stretched from about 1840 to with its peak in 1860. After the death of Robert Schumann in 1856, the contemporary composers divided themselves into two groups. One of the groups had Franz Liszt as the leader, and Berlioz and Wagner joined him in the way they viewed music. Liszt wanted change and the music composing to evolve and some composers saw his compositions as being too radical (Urpi). These composers on the opposite side, the conservative ones were Johannes Brahms accompanied by Schumann and Mendelssohn. The conservative side wanted to stay with the rules and order from the classical era, while the radicals thought that music could be just as beautiful and meaningful without form. Topics under the subject lack thorough discussion on the recent studies on speech acts, speech events and dialogue analysis.I was attra cted oh how the author could encourage the accuracy of his work by using some statistical methods such as sampling, structured interview and by using variables. Researches conducted by the author add to the reliability of the authors ideas. The concept about sampling is not discussed thoroughly in the book even it does not appear. However, sampling can be implicitly understood in the book. Chapter 5, a quantitative study of speech, where discusses selection of â€Å"different types of housing and a range of social status†¦.† (Hudson, 2007, p.60) can be used to implicitly understand sampling, a selection process of different units from a population, called the sample, to make an inference from the whole population. In other words, it is a process of determining characteristics or parameters of the whole population by selecting a suitable representative part of it (Mugo, 2004).In addition, I found interested on how the author used structured interview for he could make con clusions from a certain research. From the book, I know that this kind of interview, where an evaluator asks same questions to every interviewee offering them the identical responses, is very efficient in data gathering (ERIC/AE Staff, 2007). He emphasizes that structured interview â€Å"have used fewer than a hundred speakers and increasing the number of speakers tends to be counterproductive the analytical (Hudson, 2007, p. 160).The use of the quantitative variable by the author helps to capture the thought about quantitative difference. Linguistic variable refers to â€Å"a set of related dialect forms all of which mean the same thing and which correlate with some social grouping in the speech community† (Britain, 2005).Although the book is used a course text, it must have suggested reading, projects or suggestions for additional information for readers to know. Also, the bibliography and index is poor in construction.The book, first, is a very good example resource for people who want to have background about sociolinguistics, the language with a society and the society with a language. However, I would like to stress some main points. Since the focus of the is mainly on theoretical aspects, it is not best recommended for those who want to take practical research. This could be a great resource about sociolinguistics if it will provide readers the clear and thorough understanding about the subject matter. Another, I like on how the author organized his ideas by making conclusions after a certain topic. The conclusion allows me to check the accuracy of his idea. Also, it gave me the importance of each topic discussed.
