Philosophy of Education Teachers, especially those in the early years of school, have the extraordinary task of instilling a life-long love of learning in their students. We are there to cultivate their young minds in an arena where children feel safe and secure while expanding and exploring their knowledge of the world around them. We are to create responsible, productive and model citizens of the world. We are given an incredible task to carry out! With that in mind, however education needs to be a collaborative effort between teachers, school leaders, students and family to accomplish the task without fail. Philosophy of Leadership School leaders, as leaders in any venue, should possess strong values and beliefs. They must be able to convey their messages clearly and concisely with conviction. Leaders will be able to guide staff, allowing them to discover their own way to the desired result. Effective leaders build trusting relationships with their staff. Although in many ways schools are a top-down hierarchy, a successful leader will reconstruct this system and allow staff to contribute equally. They do not demoralize employees, but instead offer support and understanding. Who Am I as a Leader? The War of the Romantics was an important part of the Romantic music period. It stretched from about 1840 to with its peak in 1860. After the death of Robert Schumann in 1856, the contemporary composers divided themselves into two groups. One of the groups had Franz Liszt as the leader, and Berlioz and Wagner joined him in the way they viewed music. Liszt wanted change and the music composing to evolve and some composers saw his compositions as being too radical (Urpi). These composers on the opposite side, the conservative ones were Johannes Brahms accompanied by Schumann and Mendelssohn. The conservative side wanted to stay with the rules and order from the classical era, while the radicals thought that music could be just as beautiful and meaningful without form. For example, a situation arises where the company decides to launch a new product. In such a case, transformational leadership style will be used to transform the strategies of the organization so that the employees have the encouragement to think differently. In case where it is essential to include the opinions of people in decision, making participative or democratic leadership style will be followed (Popper Mayseless, 2013). An effective leader is the one who uses the leadership styles appropriately in different situations. A call centers usually use authoritative or visionary leadership style where a target is set for the employees (Me ndenhall Osland, 2012). It is the duty of leader to check whether employees fulfill the target. In engineering company where the employees work as a team, it is essential for the leaders to follow Affiliative leadership style where the leader promotes employees to work in harmony. This helps the team relax and work in harmony. Organizational culture is the way people in an organization act and behaves. One of the responsibilities of a leader is to maintain the organizational culture apart from decision making and planning. I will also include the role of management of the organization in this relationship. It is essential for the leaders to maintain relationship between manager and employee. Observation of leadership (Implication of studies of leadership) I believe that there are three types of leaders in an organization. The first type of leader is autocratic leader where the leader is authoritative in nature. The leader himself takes all the decision in an organization. The employee is not given choice of making decisions. The second type of leader is democratic in nature where it is the leader who tells the employees what to do. The employee is involved in the decision making and voicing their opinion in an organization. The third type of leadership is laissez faire where a leader has no role to play in an organization. The employees are given freedom to make their own decision. The members of the organization act as their own leader in organization. I believe that democratic leadership style is the most common leadership type that is followed in organizations. This is so because this type of style includes the opinion of both the employee and leader. This helps the leader make an effective decision at workplace, as the leaders kno w what type of strategy will affect the employees and which will not. This will help the employees stay motivated at organization. The theories and studies of leadership is not same as it widely depends on the perspective of an individual. Learning the Importance of leadership Leadership plays an important role in organization. This can be analyzed by studying the example of Australian government and the senior leadership style. The responsibility of a leader is to build a high performance team and strategies to accomplish the mission of the organization. The responsibility of a leader is to develop such strategies that it is able to eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development in a developing nation along with maintaining the national interest of Australia. A leader is required to follow strategic leadership style (Kumar et al., 2014). A leader is required to have a good communication skill and an interpersonal skill to maintain and manage the work of Australian Government Aid programme. The relationship and skills is important for building a good leader. I believe that lea der is different from a manger by looking at an example of Australian Government. A leader has followers while a manager has no follower. Even the leader has to follow a set of rules and policies that is set by the manager (Du et al., 2013). The theory says that leader is needed in every structure of the organization. This is true as an organization without a mission and vision has no value. A leader is required to set a path for its followers (Daft, 2014). I believe that in modern day organization it is essential for the managers to act as leaders as well and not differentiate the job. This is required to help the organization accept various challenges that it faces by applying the skills of managers. Charismatic leaders are the one who inspire and motivate employees. It is essential for the managers to have the leadership skills to operate the organization successfully (Griffith et al., 2014). Development of own leadership knowledge and skill I believe that following leadership skills and attributes makes a good and effective leader. Self Knowledge: it is essential for a leader to have a clear understanding of one self. Understanding the strengths and weakness of oneself is essential for effective management of organization. This is essential to help the leaders gain confidence and know exactly what they are doing. Confidence and positive attitude: I believe that this is the most important skill that a leader should have for effective management of organization. Having a positive attitude will inspire the other team members as well. Confidence is also an important skill that is required for effective leadership management. Problem solving and decision-making: it is essential for a leader to have a skill of problem solving and decision making effectively. It is essential for the leaders to solve the problems in short span of time. Vision: the most important responsibility of a leader is to set a clear vision for the organization so that the employees know which path to follow. The vision is set considering the aims, needs and values of the organization. Communication skill: a leader is the one who has good communication skill. This is also required to solve the conflict at workplace effectively. Improvement of leadership Leadership is a complex process. Leaders face various issues and challenges in an organization. It depends on the leaders how they take the challenges and solve them. For example during the attack of 9/11, many airline industries were shut to stop the passengers from travelling. The CEO of Southwest airlines handled the problem very effectively. His leadership style and practice surprised the world and inspired many people. Instead of laying off the employees the airline employee kept all the employees and also included them in the profit share of the company. They were given free movie tickets and lunch during the three-day period to help them pass their time. I believe that the leadership style that was followed by the CEO of the airline company was incredible. Different leaders at different hierarchical structure have different roles to ply. For example, in a marketing company where I work the structure of the organization is divided in different heads. The sales department is res ponsible for looking sales of the organization. The senior leader of the company is responsible for managing finance. The junior members or leaders are responsible for managing the sales team whereas the employees are responsible for managing and completing the given task on time. It is the responsibility for leaders to check whether the task is completed on time. Conclusion Hence, it can be seen from the above reflection that no particular theory on leadership can be developed. Leadership according to me is an act where the job of a leader is to solve the problems that the employees at an organization face, set vision and inspire its team members to work hard to achieve the goals of the organization. After taking 500 steps from my doorstep I would step onto the main road where the torture would begin. Automobiles sailed by me always slowing down slightly to pretend they cared about avoiding me. Parents driving their precious children to school, these were the parents that would wake you up in the morning with breakfast in bed and allow you to come and jump into their bedââ¬â¢s and watch television until it was time to leave for school. Those were the ââ¬Å"Luckiesâ⬠. They were the ones that I envied. After them came the wave of students who were far enough in life to own their own vehicles. They would always fly by recklessly at speeds comparable to rocket sh ips. I would always stop and stare at them half expecting for their machines to slowly lift of the ground and take flight. I called them the ââ¬Å"Suicidalsâ⬠. When the occasional friend drove by they would always wave and smile at me, sometimes yelling at my from the window, These moments were the most agonizing parts, they gave me an illusion of hope one that would always be crushed as there machines whizzed past me without stopping to offer me a ride. No doubt they thought the walk to be character building for a child, parents always have these outrageous thoughts about matters relating there children and how tedious and labor intensive tasks often would help make their child a better person. I called these ââ¬Å"Assholesâ⬠. These walks I made every morning did indeed help my character. They taught me how there are some people in this world who have their lives built for them and therefore never have to try to succeed. There are those who have the potential to succeed but end up going on a rocky and dangerous path eventually ending in there self destruction. There are some people who are just assholes and will always be there nagging you at the back of your brain trying to convince you that you are worse then them and at the same time trying to be your friend. There are some people will never have the thought to confront you face to face about any conflict but will instead choose to sit aside and judge your actions with the most severity. The people you want to meet are the ones who took the long and wearisome paths to there success. These people endured all the doubts others thrust upon them. They worked for years on projects that seemed to be ever beyond there reach. They carried the weight of the failure of others on there backs, but these are the people who dared to dream of those unthinkable possibilities. In the words of Thoreau ââ¬Å"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has i magined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.â⬠These are the people I aspire to be.

Sociolinguistics Essays Sociolinguistics Essay Sociolinguistics Essay The book discuses topics on sociolinguistics such as differences in language, language diversity, code-switching, prototype, speech, anthropological linguistics, linguistic and social disparity, gender difference and educational inferences of sociolinguistics. This second edition added up new segment on civility and courtesy, accommodation and samples. He also opened out the discussion about sex differences, association between language and thought and speech. As discussed in his first edition, language variety, speech as a social interaction and its quantitative study keep on.This is a very intriguing book. Hudson makes several statements but conflict with what he wants to articulate. For example, on page 11, he says ââ¬Å"no two speakers have the same language, because no two speakers have the same experience of languageâ⬠(Hudson, 1996)and ââ¬Å"Effectively, the ââ¬Ësocio-ââ¬Ëof ââ¬Ësociolinguistics is redundant.â⬠This is somewhat in c lash with his conventional conception about language, assortment, dialect and speech communities in his second chapter. He disputes the subsistence of them and canââ¬â¢t be used as a theoretical constructs.In some topics, the association of the topics is not intact but rather same topics can be found anywhere within the book. The author seems to ââ¬Å"beat around the bushâ⬠where ideas are circling back on itself. The author argue the work of both Labov and Chomsky without clear explanations about what he is trying to say and what he want reader to understand. His arguments about variance of his idea against Labov and Chomsky are incomprehensible arguments. Specifically, his explanations about the section on quantitative study of speech are very poor. In addition, the graphs being used are poorly labeled or unlabeled. In explaining the authors ideas, thereââ¬â¢s no precision and exactness. In page 16, For instance, he says ââ¬Å"As for morphology, this is left out altog ether, which again makes for ease of learningâ⬠¦.â⬠(Hudson, 1996) .A reader canââ¬â¢t grasp how morphology has been left out altogether. There are so many explanations in the book without clear thoughts and sometimes careless.The significant role of the book can be taken seriously in the first two chapters of the seven chapters. For example, he makes significant arguments about varieties of language. He says, in pages 23-24, à that language should be taken into account as ââ¬Å"a phenomenon including all languages of the world and then stresses that there is variety among languages is difficult to hunt down (Hudson, 1996). However, he concludes that varieties are not present. Rather, aspects of language may vary. People have different ways on how they use their language. People have different items on how they utter their language. Every people have a ââ¬Å"part of the setâ⬠in the items they have in their language.In chapters three through six, he makes a sign ificant notion of several concepts of sociolinguistics. According to Hudson, sociolinguistics deals with the study of language in relation with the society. I find very interesting in chapter three ââ¬â Language, culture and thought. Specifically, his arguments about prototypes and sexism in the language system are very good which I found to be attractive. It can give details about indistinct boundaries of concepts where critical feature cannot. Language maintenance and alterations are very difficult to analyze. However, due to Hudsonââ¬â¢s prototype theory which asserts that it is the groundwork for Fishmanââ¬â¢s speech domain concept, the evaluation and investigation of language preservation and modification becomes is being facilitated.Chapter Four, ââ¬Å"Speech as Social Interaction,â⬠is difficult to analyze the ideas presented. Topics under the subject lack thorough discussion on the recent studies on speech acts, speech events and dialogue analysis.I was attra cted oh how the author could encourage the accuracy of his work by using some statistical methods such as sampling, structured interview and by using variables. Researches conducted by the author add to the reliability of the authors ideas. The concept about sampling is not discussed thoroughly in the book even it does not appear. However, sampling can be implicitly understood in the book. Chapter 5, a quantitative study of speech, where discusses selection of ââ¬Å"different types of housing and a range of social statusâ⬠¦.â⬠(Hudson, 2007, p.60) can be used to implicitly understand sampling, a selection process of different units from a population, called the sample, to make an inference from the whole population. In other words, it is a process of determining characteristics or parameters of the whole population by selecting a suitable representative part of it (Mugo, 2004).In addition, I found interested on how the author used structured interview for he could make con clusions from a certain research. From the book, I know that this kind of interview, where an evaluator asks same questions to every interviewee offering them the identical responses, is very efficient in data gathering (ERIC/AE Staff, 2007). He emphasizes that structured interview ââ¬Å"have used fewer than a hundred speakers and increasing the number of speakers tends to be counterproductive the analytical (Hudson, 2007, p. 160).The use of the quantitative variable by the author helps to capture the thought about quantitative difference. Linguistic variable refers to ââ¬Å"a set of related dialect forms all of which mean the same thing and which correlate with some social grouping in the speech communityâ⬠(Britain, 2005).Although the book is used a course text, it must have suggested reading, projects or suggestions for additional information for readers to know. Also, the bibliography and index is poor in construction.The book, first, is a very good example resource for people who want to have background about sociolinguistics, the language with a society and the society with a language. However, I would like to stress some main points. Since the focus of the is mainly on theoretical aspects, it is not best recommended for those who want to take practical research. This could be a great resource about sociolinguistics if it will provide readers the clear and thorough understanding about the subject matter. Another, I like on how the author organized his ideas by making conclusions after a certain topic. The conclusion allows me to check the accuracy of his idea. Also, it gave me the importance of each topic discussed.
